By using Microsoft’s Office productivity suite you have to pay to be able to create text documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. The thing is that if you don’t want to part with your hard earned money, you don’t have to. You see, there are plenty of alternatives out there. One nice alternative is offered by SoftMaker FreeOffice. The productivity suite provides functionality similar to that of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, just that it doesn’t ask for any money in return.

SoftMaker FreeOffice is available for two operating systems: for Microsoft’s Windows operating system and for the open source Linux operating system.
The installer for Windows is about 60MB in size. Run this installer once you’re done downloading it, and you will be presented with a setup wizard that will ask you to choose one of three installation methods: Typical, Custom, and Complete.

SoftMaker FreeOffice is made up of three main applications:
TextMaker – use it to create and edit Word documents.
PlanMaker – use it to create and edit Excel documents.
softMaker Presentations – use it to create and edit PowerPoint files.

If you're used to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications, you will find Text Maker’s, PlanMaker’s and SoftMaker Presentations’ interface very familiar. This means you won’t have any problems with the interface; you will immediately feel at home and you will be able to quickly get to work. The functionality will also feel familiar –the productivity suite’s functionality can be very easily accessed.

SoftMaker FreeOffice also comes with a utility called Smash. When you run it, four icons will show up in the system tray. Three are for TextMaker, PlanMaler, and Presentations; the fourth one provides functionality similar to that provided by Windows Explorer. So by using Smash, you can easily access TextMaker, PlanMaler, and Presentations; you can also easily access My Documents, the Control Panel, the Start Menu, and more.

TextMaker, PlanMaler, and SoftMaker Presentations provide a very nice alternative to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Go get SoftMaker FreeOffice if you need a free and feature rich productivity suite.

Pros

SoftMaker FreeOffice is available for Windows and Linux. Installing the application on Windows is a simple matter. You will feel at home with the interface; the interface can be customized (pick a dialog style, a supported language, a workspace color). Use this suite to create and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. SoftMaker FreeOffice is free for home and office use.

Cons

None that I could think of.
